Kankaria Lake Ahmedabad Gets New Lighting System With Thematic Displays and Projection Mapping
August 15, 2026
Ahmedabad: Kankaria Lake has received a new nighttime attraction with the inauguration of a permanent architectural lighting system covering approximately 4.5 km around the lake.
The system was inaugurated by Ahmedabad Mayor Hiteshbhai Barot at a programme held at Gate No. 1, Pushpakunj, Kankaria. MP Dineshbhai Makwana and MLA Amulbhai Bhatt were also present, along with senior AMC office-bearers and officials.
The new lighting system has been designed to give Kankaria a more attractive appearance after sunset while improving illumination across the lakefront. It features digital lighting processing, projection mapping, multimedia effects and sound-synchronised thematic lighting.
The project covers the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the permanent architectural lighting system around the lake. It also includes projection mapping at monuments and entrances, facade lighting, area illumination and multimedia displays.
Under the project, different lighting themes will be introduced for festivals and major events held throughout the year. At least 12 themes will be developed during the contract period, allowing the lighting displays to be changed according to the occasion.
The modern system replaces the older lighting arrangement at Kankaria, which had become outdated and was no longer providing adequate illumination. The new setup is expected to enhance the overall visitor experience at the lake complex, which attracts tourists, schoolchildren and visitors from across India and abroad throughout the year.
A key feature of the new system is the post-top lanterns installed along the Kankaria walkway. These fixtures use dual-optics technology to provide adequate light on the walkway while creating a softer ambient glow around the surrounding area, balancing visitor safety with the visual appeal of the lakefront.
The lighting fixtures have an IP66 waterproof rating to withstand humidity, strong winds and monsoon conditions around the lake. Their double-skinned outer construction and finish have also been designed to complement Kankaria’s greenery and lakefront surroundings.
The system has been designed with easier maintenance in mind. On-site servicing and cleaning can be carried out without removing the entire fixture from its pole, which is expected to reduce maintenance time and costs.
The project also includes five years of operation and maintenance, during which Kankaria Lake will continue to be illuminated with modern lighting and thematic displays for festivals, events and other occasions.
