350 Law Students in Limbo as Nirma University Delays Classes, Hostel Facilities

Ahmedabad: Around 350 students admitted to the five-year integrated undergraduate law course for the 2026-27 academic session at Nirma University’s Institute of Law, located on SG Highway in the city, are facing difficulties over delays in hostel facilities and the commencement of classes, allegedly due to administrative lapses by the university.

According to the students’ parents, the university collected an annual academic fee of Rs. 4.25 lakh per student in May, amounting to around Rs. 15 crore in total. The academic session was initially scheduled to begin on July 19 but was later postponed to August 1, with the administration citing pending work on a new 10-storey hostel building.

The parents said that during an online pre-orientation session held on July 25, the university administration assured them that the hostel was ready. Based on this assurance, several parents travelled to Ahmedabad from different parts of the country.

However, during the live orientation programme on August 1, the administration reportedly informed students and parents that the hostel was not ready and that classes would now commence from September 1.

Following the announcement, some parents inspected the hostel premises in person and alleged that construction work was still underway. They also raised concerns over the safety of students if they were required to stay in the unfinished building.

The parents further alleged that after they raised objections, the university assured them that alternative accommodation would be arranged outside the campus. They were also reportedly promised compensation of Rs. 1 lakh, along with a refund of the hostel and mess fees.

However, according to the parents, none of the promised amounts has been refunded so far, and they have not received a clear response from the university regarding the pending payments.

The parents said they are also concerned about the next fee instalment, which is due in March 2027, while the academic session has yet to begin. They alleged that the prolonged uncertainty has caused financial and mental stress for students and their families.

The parents are now seeking clarity from the university regarding the revised academic schedule, hostel arrangements, refunds and the compensation allegedly promised to them. DeshGujarat
