AMC Proposes Local Area Plan to Revamp 3.3 Sq Km Around Ahmedabad Railway Station

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is preparing a Local Area Plan (LAP) for a 3.3 sq km area surrounding Kalupur railway station and has submitted a proposal to the standing committee for the appointment of a consultant.

The Kalupur railway station is currently undergoing redevelopment, while a bullet train station is also being constructed on the premises. The railway station at Asarwa is also proposed to be developed.

Under the LAP, the AMC plans to improve connectivity to Kalupur railway station by widening existing roads, constructing new bridges and identifying alternative routes to ease traffic congestion.

As per a TOI report, an AMC official stated that while Town Planning (TP) schemes are generally prepared for larger areas of 100 hectares or more, smaller areas are not covered under such schemes. However, the Local Area Plan for the 3.3 sq km area surrounding Kalupur railway station will involve micro-level planning.

The official said the plan would include widening existing roads or developing new ones to tackle traffic congestion, besides identifying land for public utilities and future infrastructure projects.

Heritage structures to remain untouched

Notably, the 3.3 sq km area identified for the Kalupur LAP includes heritage pols in Khadia, Jamalpur, Shahpur and Kalupur. However, UNESCO-protected heritage buildings in these areas have been excluded from the plan and will not be affected by road widening or other infrastructure projects.

The proposed Kalupur LAP covers parts of Kalupur, Asarwa, Saraspur, Sarangpur and Gomtipur, with its boundary extending from Sarangpur Circle Road through Revdi Bazaar, Idgah Bridge, Chamunda Bridge and Sarangpur Bridge. DeshGujarat
