AMC Seizes Over 3,800 Kg of Food Products, Seals 3 Units

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Food Department has sealed three food businesses and suspended the sale of over 3,800 kg of food products during inspections across the city for violations of food safety norms. The total estimated value of the food products placed under suspension is Rs. 9.22 lakh.

The action covered units operating without the required FSSAI licence or registration, unhygienic food preparation and storage conditions, violations of packaging and labelling requirements, the use of banned synthetic food colour in namkeen, and the sale of ghee previously declared substandard.

Among the major actions, M.M. Food Products in Vatva was sealed after officials found that sauces and other food products were being manufactured without the required FSSAI licence or registration. Officials also found unhygienic conditions and violations of packaging and labelling norms. Around 2,516 kg of soy sauce, chilli sauce, chutney, pumpkin and corn flour were placed under a stop-sale order, with an estimated market value of Rs. 1.75 lakh.

Shri Mateshwari Chavana & Sweet Mart in Vejalpur was also sealed after the use of a banned synthetic food colour was detected in namkeen. Around 150 kg of namkeen, valued at approximately Rs. 30,000, was placed under a stop-sale order.

At Gujarat Fry Centre in Chandlodia, the AMC found that the food business was operating without the necessary FSSAI licence or registration. Unhygienic conditions were also observed at the food preparation, handling and storage premises. The unit was subsequently sealed.

In another action, Mahavir Ghee Bhandar in Madhupura was found selling ghee that had earlier been declared “substandard” by the Food Laboratory. The AMC placed 1,140 kg of ghee, packed in 76 tins of 15 kg each, under a stop-sale order, with an estimated market value of Rs. 7.17 lakh.

The AMC said further legal action would be taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with applicable rules and regulations, depending on the nature of the violations and laboratory findings.

The civic body said its Food Department would continue intensive inspections and take action against food businesses operating without FSSAI registration or licences, maintaining unhygienic conditions, using prohibited food colours, violating packaging and labelling norms, or selling food products that fail to meet prescribed quality standards.
