Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has estimated tax dues of around Rs. 20 crore from Eka Club and instructed its officials and legal counsel to present relevant records before the Gujarat High Court in an ongoing tax assessment matter.
The Standing Committee Chairman said Eka Club had filed a writ petition in the High Court in 2022, seeking to reduce the tax assessment factor from 6 to 2 and levy tax accordingly.
An investigation conducted by the corporation found that, apart from educational activities, commercial units, hotels, restaurants and properties rented out to large companies were operating on the Eka Club premises.
The corporation has handed over documents, including relevant rental agreements, to its lawyer for presentation before the High Court. According to the AMC, around Rs. 20 crore in tax dues is pending from Eka Club.
The corporation has instructed the Tax Department to submit all necessary records before the court and take appropriate action in view of the court’s order restraining the corporation from taking sealing or other action against Eka Club.
The civic body has also asked its legal team to submit notices related to the change in the tax assessment factor, evidence of the Eka Club manager’s signatures on the notices, the club’s assessment application and registered rental agreements concerning the commercial use of its premises.
The AMC Standing Committee Chairman said the corporation’s interest in tax collection should be protected and that the matter should be presented strongly before the court. DeshGujarat
