Fungus found in Motichoor laddus ordered from Blinkit; Surat video goes viral

Surat: Concerns over food safety have resurfaced in Surat after laddus ordered through the quick-commerce platform Blinkit in the Pandesara area were allegedly found stale, rotten and covered with fungus. The sweets had reportedly been ordered for distribution as prasad among staff during Ganesh Chaturthi.

According to local businessman Praveen Gupta, he had ordered 1 kg of laddus through Blinkit for his staff. However, after receiving the parcel and opening the box, he allegedly found that the sweets were in an unfit condition and had a foul smell.

Gupta questioned the delivery person about the condition of the sweets. According to him, the delivery person responded that their responsibility was only to deliver the parcel and that they were not required to check its contents.

Following the incident, Gupta searched for the contact details of the Surat Food Department and contacted officials to report the matter. He alleged that instead of sending a team to inspect the food or collect samples, officials told him over the phone that he would have to visit the Food Department office at Bahumali Bhavan if he wanted to file a formal complaint.

The response reportedly angered the businessman, who questioned why food safety officials do not conduct immediate inspections when potentially unsafe food products are brought to their notice.

The incident has also raised renewed questions over food safety checks in Surat, particularly during the festive season when demand for sweets and other food products increases. Citizens have called for stricter and more proactive sampling and inspections to ensure that unsafe food does not reach consumers.

The issue comes amid recent food safety concerns in the city. A four-year-old girl reportedly died following food poisoning, while more than 100 students reportedly fell ill after consuming food at a P.P. Savani hostel. These incidents have intensified concerns among citizens over the need for regular food inspections rather than action only after complaints or incidents come to light.

The allegations regarding the laddus and the response of the concerned authorities would require verification through official inspection, sampling and testing to establish the condition and source of the sweets. DeshGujarat
