Heavy rain lashes Ahmedabad amid IMD yellow alert; area-wise details here

Ahmedabad: Heavy rain lashed Ahmedabad this morning, causing waterlogging in several parts of the city and disrupting traffic and public transport. The downpour came amid an India Meteorological Department (IMD) yellow alert for rain and thunderstorms in the region.

According to Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) data, the city recorded an average of 2.77 inches of rainfall between 6 am and 10 am. The South West Zone received the highest average rainfall at 3.52 inches, followed by the West Zone at 3.33 inches.

Sarkhej Urban Health recorded the highest rainfall at 5.22 inches during the four-hour period. Bakrol recorded 4.33 inches, Navrangpura 4.29 inches, Vasna 4.13 inches and Sarkhej 3.88 inches.

Several other areas also received intense rainfall. Kalupur recorded 3.74 inches, Tagore Control 3.66 inches, Lambha 3.60 inches, Memnagar 3.46 inches, Chandlodiya 3.21 inches, and Dudheshwar and Asharwa 3.15 inches each.

The heavy rain led to waterlogging at several locations, disrupting traffic movement across the city. Parimal, Shahibaug, Akhbarnagar and the LC-25 underpass near Makarba were closed due to waterlogging.

47 AMTS routes affected

The rain also disrupted Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) operations. According to diversion details, 47 AMTS routes were affected, with 41 routes diverted and six routes temporarily curtailed.

The diversions were reported at several waterlogged locations:

  • Akhbarnagar: Route 202 diverted via Bhimjipura and Vijaynagar through Pragatinagar.
  • Madalpur Garnala: Seven routes — 45, 45/1, 42, 43, 151, 151/3 and 151/4 — diverted via Lal Darwaja, Ellis Bridge and Law Garden.
  • Shahibaug Underbridge: Seven routes — 105, 50, 90, 70, 200, 300 and 130/4 — diverted via Delhi Chakla and Namaste Circle.
  • Jalaram Underbridge/Parimal Underbridge: Four routes — 58, 49, 136 and 204 — diverted via Paldi, Anjali Cross Road and Nehrunagar Circle.
  • Chandranagar: Route 33 diverted via Anjali Cross Road and Vasna.
  • Shahibaug Underbridge: Eight routes — 90S, 90, 130/4, 200, 300, 800, 900 and 202 — diverted via Civil Hospital, Namaste Circle, Anjali Cross Road and Gevar Circle.
  • Vishala: Routes 31/5 and 35 diverted via APMC Market and Jivraj Cross Road.
  • Anandnagar: Routes 45 and 45/1 diverted via Shivanand, Iskcon Mandir and Prahladnagar.
  • Gota Muktidham: Routes 54 and 76 diverted via Gota Gam and SG Highway.
  • Gurukul: Six routes — 51SH, 51, 53, 58, 52/2 and 136 — diverted via Vijay Cross Road, Gujarat University, Panjrapole and Vastrapur.

Six AMTS routes curtailed

Six additional routes were temporarily curtailed because of waterlogging:

  • Vishala: Routes 31 and 150 curtailed up to Vasna.
  • Ambedkarnagar: Routes 32, 34/4, 39/3 and 40/3 curtailed up to Vejalpur.

BRTS services also disrupted

The heavy rain also affected Ahmedabad’s BRTS network. Of the 17 BRTS routes, five were temporarily closed. Routes 3 and 12 were affected by waterlogging at the Akhbarnagar Underpass, while Route 11 was closed due to waterlogging near Soma Textiles. Route 14 was shut between Sanand Circle and Sarangpur Darwaja due to waterlogging near Swaminarayan College in Sarkhej, while Route 101 was closed due to waterlogging near Hanumanpura and Gurudwara.

However, according to the latest update, seven of the 17 BRTS routes are operating regularly, while 10 are running on shortened routes. No BRTS route is currently temporarily closed.

  • Route 1: Ghuma Gam–Maninagar — shortened from Ghuma Gam to Nehrunagar due to waterlogging around Bhairavnath, Rambaug and Manekbaug.
  • Route 3: RTO Circle–Maninagar — shortened up to Danilimada Char Rasta due to waterlogging at Akhbarnagar Underpass, Shree Valinath Chowk, Memnagar, Swaminarayan College and Manekbaug.
  • Route 4: LD Engineering College–Zundal Circle/Ambatownship — shortened from Akhbarnagar to Amba Township.
  • Route 5: Hanspura Ring Road–Vasna — shortened from Hanspura Ring Road to Narol.
  • Route 8: Zundal Circle–Sarkari Lito Press Cabin — shortened from DCIS Circle to Juna Vadaj.
  • Route 9: Gota Vasantnagar Township–Maninagar — shortened from Gota Vasantnagar Township to Sola Cross Road.
  • Route 12: Rabari Colony–RTO Circle — shortened up to Danilimada Char Rasta.
  • Route 15: Ahmedabad Domestic Airport–RTO Circle–Iskcon Cross Road — shortened up to Akhbarnagar.
  • Route 101: RTO Circular — shortened from Akhbarnagar to Zundal Circle (DCIS).

Routes 2, 6, 7, 11, 14, 16 and 17 continue to operate regularly.

Meanwhile, water levels at the Vasna Barrage stood at 130 feet as of 10 am, with 14 gates currently open as authorities manage the increased water flow.

The IMD has forecast continued rain and thunderstorms in Ahmedabad, with wet conditions likely to persist. The heavy spell has caused significant disruption to road and public transport services, particularly in low-lying areas of the city. DeshGujarat
