Five ghee brands found substandard during AMC checks; 3100+ kg stock seized

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has found five samples of ghee sold under different brands to be substandard during food safety checks in the Madhupura area. The samples were collected from H.P. Foods in Madhupura and failed to meet the prescribed quality standards during laboratory testing.

The five samples declared substandard were Gopi Shree Desi Cow Ghee, Shri Amrut Pure Cow Ghee, KT Krishna Premium Cow Ghee, Khusali Pure Cow Ghee and Prasang Desi Cow Ghee.

Following the laboratory results, the AMC Food Department conducted a further investigation into the distribution and sale of the products. Officials traced the distribution of the products to several units in Ahmedabad, including Platinum Industrial Park near Vatva, Shree Food Product in Kathwada and Arihant Marketing in Ghodasar.

The AMC also sealed the premises of Arihant Marketing after finding that it was operating without an FSSAI licence.

During the action, the civic body stopped the sale of 3,142 kg of ghee worth around ₹12.93 lakh within its jurisdiction. The department also collected eight additional samples under the Food Safety and Standards Act for testing.

The AMC said details of products whose manufacturing units are located in other parts of Gujarat have been forwarded to the state government for further action.

The civic body has advised ghee manufacturers and distributors to maintain laboratory testing or analysis reports for every batch available for sale or distribution. Caterers and other food businesses that purchase ghee in large quantities have also been advised to obtain batch-specific laboratory reports from distributors, retailers or manufacturers and maintain proper records of the quantities purchased and batch numbers.

The AMC has urged consumers to exercise caution while purchasing loose ghee, as there is a possibility of vegetable fat or other substances being adulterated into such products and sold as pure ghee.

The Food Department said it would continue inspections and take legal action against food adulteration, unhygienic practices, substandard food products and violations of food safety regulations in the interest of public health. DeshGujarat
