Gujarat, NPCIL sign MoU to explore sites for new nuclear power projects
October 01, 2026
Gandhinagar: Gujarat has taken a step towards exploring new nuclear power projects, with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to identify suitable sites for nuclear power development in the state.
Under the agreement, NPCIL and GSECL will work together to explore potential locations in Gujarat for setting up new Nuclear Power Projects (NPPs). The collaboration will include sharing relevant information, identifying potential sites and assessing their technical suitability for nuclear power development.
The initiative is aimed at assessing Gujarat’s potential to contribute to India’s expanding nuclear energy programme and strengthen the state’s role in the country’s long-term energy strategy.
The MoU was signed on October 1, 2026, in the presence of Gujarat Energy and Petrochemicals Minister Rushikesh Patel. Principal Secretary, Energy and Petrochemicals Department, and GSECL Chairman Ashwini Kumar signed the agreement on behalf of GSECL, while NPCIL Chairman and Managing Director V. Rajesh signed on behalf of the nuclear power utility.
According to NPCIL, nuclear power is expected to play an important role in India’s efforts to strengthen energy security and expand reliable, low-carbon electricity generation. The collaboration is also aligned with the country’s broader clean-energy transition and its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. DeshGujarat
