Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday demolished around 75 houses in the Sabarmati area as part of a road-widening project connecting Sabarmati Toll Plaza to Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera. The road, currently 18 metres wide, is being widened to 61 metres along a stretch of around one kilometre ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
The demolition drive began on Tuesday morning, with the civic body deploying excavators, JCB machines and manual labour to clear the affected properties. The project has affected several residential localities, including Baldev Nagar, Shankarji ni Chali, Nirant Nagar and Anand Nagar.
According to the AMC’s West Zone Estate Department, notices had been issued to residents whose houses fell within the road-widening alignment. The stretch runs from Sabarmati Toll Plaza to the area opposite D-Mart on the route to the stadium.

Rent assistance for affected residents
The civic body has issued rent cheques to eligible residents to help them arrange temporary accommodation until alternative housing is allotted. According to officials, 66 residents who submitted proof of residence have accepted the cheques. Residents unable to provide the required documents have not been offered alternative housing by the corporation.
While most of the affected houses had been vacated before the demolition drive, some residents were still moving out on Tuesday morning. With alternative accommodation not immediately available, some residents placed their belongings on the footpath as demolition work continued.
Commercial properties also affected
The road-widening project falls under a Town Planning (TP) scheme connecting Sabarmati Toll Plaza to Narendra Modi Stadium. More than 165 commercial and residential properties have been affected by the project, including 66 commercial properties that were demolished earlier.
The AMC is undertaking the infrastructure work as part of preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The widened road is expected to improve access to the stadium and ease traffic movement in the area. DeshGujarat
