Kafil Ahmed, Accused in ₹25.71 Crore Drug Seizure Case, Shot During Escape Bid in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The main accused in a ₹25.71 crore heroin and MD drugs seizure case was shot in the leg by Ahmedabad Crime Branch personnel on Monday after he allegedly attempted to escape from police custody near the Sabarmati Riverfront. Kafil Ahmed, also known as Javed Ansari, was being taken for a routine medical examination when the incident occurred at around 4:30 pm, police said.

According to the police, Ahmed attempted to flee while being escorted by a Crime Branch team led by Police Inspector V.B. Aal. A scuffle broke out between the accused and the officers, following which the police fired at his leg to prevent his escape.

Ahmed was among three alleged drug suppliers arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch on October 20 after officers intercepted a black SUV bearing a Delhi registration number near the CTM Express Highway toll plaza. The operation led to the seizure of heroin and MD drugs collectively valued at ₹25.71 crore, according to the case details.

The other two accused were identified as Tifel Nokhej and Mohammed Imran, alias Raja Alvi. All three were arrested in connection with the drug trafficking case.

How the drug seizure unfolded

The operation followed a tip-off received by Surat Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhavesh Rojia that Ahmed, who had reportedly spent years in jail in a drug case and was out on parole, was travelling from Delhi with a consignment of drugs bound for Rajkot via Ahmedabad.

Rojia subsequently alerted Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot. Following a meeting involving senior police officials, including Crime Branch Joint Commissioner of Police Sharad Singhal and Deputy Commissioner of Police Aji Rajian, two teams were formed under Police Inspectors P.M. Dhakda and V.B. Aal. A team from the Surat Crime Branch, led by Inspector S.N. Parmar, also joined the operation.

On October 20, three Crime Branch teams deployed in multiple vehicles near the CTM Express Highway toll plaza. The teams positioned themselves at separate locations, approximately 200 feet apart, to intercept the suspected vehicle.

At around 8:45 pm, a black SUV with a Delhi registration number arrived at the location. The officers signalled one another and moved to stop the vehicle. A search allegedly led to the recovery of heroin and MD drugs concealed inside chocolate packets beneath the SUV’s seats.

The three occupants, Kafil Ahmed alias Javed Ansari, Tifel Nokhej and Mohammed Imran alias Raja Alvi, were subsequently arrested. DeshGujarat
