Gujarat RTOs Crack Down on Improper HSRP Installation; Dealers to Face Inspections

Gandhinagar: Vehicle dealerships across Gujarat will face surprise inspections following a directive from the Transport Commissioner’s office to curb irregularities in the installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs). Dealers found using ordinary rivets instead of the mandatory non-removable snap-lock mechanism could face penalties, including suspension of their trade certificates.

The inspections will cover two-wheeler, car and commercial vehicle dealerships. RTO officials have been directed to verify customer records, including vehicle details, Aadhaar information, registration certificates (RCs), mobile numbers and dealers’ trade certificate validity.

The crackdown follows complaints in Ahmedabad about HSRP number plates coming loose or getting washed away during heavy rains and waterlogging. Subsequent inspections reportedly found some authorised dealers using cheaper ordinary rivets instead of the prescribed snap-lock system to cut installation costs.

Under Rule 50(V) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), rear HSRPs must be secured using a non-removable and non-reusable snap-lock mechanism.

In July 2026, the Subhash Bridge RTO issued notices to two-wheeler and four-wheeler dealerships in Ahmedabad city and rural areas over improper HSRP installation. The latest directive extends the enforcement drive across Gujarat, placing dealerships under scrutiny to ensure compliance. DeshGujarat
