Gandhinagar Gets New Mayor
November 03, 2026
Gandhinagar: The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Monday announced the appointment of Rup Singh Thakor as Mayor, Anjanaben Mehta as Deputy Mayor and Mahendra Patel as Standing Committee Chairman following a BJP meeting held at the civic body’s headquarters.
Thakor, 29, is a first-time corporator who contested the municipal elections for the first time. His family is also associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The announcement came after a delay in the commencement of the GMC’s general meeting, which was scheduled to appoint the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Standing Committee Chairman and other office-bearers. The meeting could not begin in the morning as the BJP’s official mandate for the appointments had not arrived.
The Congress raised the issue before the Municipal Commissioner. The BJP’s city in-charge reached the municipal corporation around 1.30 pm with the mandate, following which coordination meetings and discussions with party leaders were held to finalise the appointments.
Meanwhile, the Congress announced Karamjit Singh Vaghela, who won from Ward No. 6, as the Leader of the Opposition in the civic body.
In the 44-member Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, the BJP won 38 seats, the Congress secured five, and an independent candidate won one seat. DeshGujarat
