November 03, 2026
Ahmedabad: A woman and her 15-year-old son were killed, while a couple sustained serious injuries after a speeding Toyota Fortuner allegedly driven by an intoxicated motorist rammed into four people on a footpath in Nikol on Monday night. The driver was arrested after locals caught him while he was allegedly attempting to flee the scene, police said.
The accused, identified as 36-year-old Viral Savjibhai Chaudhary, was found to be under the influence of alcohol during a medical examination, police said. The accident occurred between 9.30 pm and 9.45 pm on November 2 when the Fortuner (registration number GJ18EF4060) allegedly veered onto the footpath and hit four people.
The deceased were identified as Poonamben Jitendrabhai Nagwadiya, who sold traditional chaniya cholis, and her 15-year-old son, Sagar Nagwadiya. The injured were identified as 34-year-old Kartik Vasoya and his wife, Snehalben Vasoya, also 34. The couple was reportedly shopping when the accident occurred. Both remain hospitalised in serious condition.
The impact was so severe that a young man was trapped between the car’s bonnet and a wall. Bystanders reportedly lifted the vehicle to rescue him.

According to police, the Fortuner was registered in Chaudhary’s name. He is a resident of Mansa and currently lives in Nana Chiloda. A search of the vehicle initially led to the recovery of two beer cans, while a subsequent inspection revealed four more, taking the total to six.
PI S.I. Sumra of the ‘I’ Division Traffic Police said four people were injured in the accident, of whom two died during treatment. He added that Chaudhary was taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment after an angry crowd allegedly assaulted him following the accident.
Police have registered a case against Chaudhary under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to culpable homicide, along with relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation and legal proceedings are underway.
The incident has also brought renewed attention to alleged reckless driving and late-night racing in the locality. Residents claimed that overspeeding was frequent in the area and accused the police of failing to curb the menace. They also alleged that liquor was being sold openly in the locality, with little enforcement against those involved.
The Fortuner had reportedly been penalised for overspeeding earlier this year. On February 26, 2026, traffic police issued an e-challan against the vehicle for overspeeding near the Karai Cut on the SP Ring Road. DeshGujarat
