IIMs will be able to offer degree: Javdekar at IIMA campus

Ahmedabad: Union Human Resource Development(HRD) minister Prakash Javdekar today visited Indian Institute of Management(IIM) Ahmedabad. He held meeting with IIM faculty and students.
Later speaking to media persons, the union minister said IIMs will get further autonomy after passing of IIM Bill.
He said IIMs function as society at present and therefore they are not able to give degrees or diploma for their courses. The government will make amendment in law through IIM Bill which will make it possible for IIMs to present degrees.
Javdekar said he has called a meeting of Chairmen and Directors of all IIMs on 20th this month at Shillong. He said he had earlier called similar meeting for IITs.He said such meeting for NITs and Central Universities are also planned in order to review the functioning of institutes and overall system.

Union Minister of Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar today said that the priority of the Narendra Modi government at center was now to improve the quality of education from KG to PG level.
Talking to media persons here after a meeting with the faculties of IIM-Ahmedabad, Mr Javadekar said that the job of making education reachable is almost done. Now the main focus of the government was to improve its quality.
‘The expansion of education is almost done. Today from KG to PG level there are 27 crore students. Now the main objective is improvement in its quality. This is the also the priority of the Modi government,’ he said.
Shri Javadekar said that since his taking charge of the office of the HRD ministry he was visiting various educational institutions and having discussions with teachers and students for improvement in the overall education system and framing of new policy.
He said that with this objective in mind he also had a very meaningful meeting with the faculties of IIMA. He would also be participating in the convocation ceremony of PDPU near Gandhinagar and an event in teacher’s university.
To a query he said that the government was trying to give more autonomy to the IIM’s. ‘There is a proposal for a new bill with regard to IIM’s through which new law to give more autonomy to these institutes in line with the IIT’s and NIT’s and give power to IIM’s to be able to offer graduate and post graduate degrees to its students will be enacted. Currently IIM’s can’t do so as these are registered as societies.
