No FIR in Mahesana custodial death as none turn up to do so yet, second PM being done: SP Mandalik

Mahesana: Police in Mahesana has not lodged an FIR in connection with the death of a Patidar youth in judicial custody, who was arrested and jailed in connection with a theft case involving a petty amount, so far as none including any family member of the deceased has turned up to do so, SP Chaitanya Mandlik today said.

After two days of bandh call in Mahesana and whole North Gujarat on the issue, a second post mortem of the body of Ketan Patel, is also being conducted today.

SP Mandlik said that the second Post Mortem by a team in which senior doctors from NHL Medical college and VS hospital of Ahmedabad and a Foresic expert were included, was underway. The video-graphy of the PM was also being done.

‘The first PM was conducted yesterday by another team and the videography was also conducted but as the family members were adamant on second PM, it is again being conducted,’ the SP said adding that so far no FIR has been lodged as none had turned up for it.

‘The family members who had refused to take the body have said that they would study the second PM report and then only decide about filing the FIR,’ he added saying that a judicial probe in the matter was also taking place under the supervision of the CJM.

To a query the SP said that the police could lodge the FIR at its own but was waiting for the family members to do so.

Ketan, a resident of Balol village who was lodged in Mahesana sub jail after his arrest recently for alleged theft in a shop where he worked, had died three days ago after being admitted to hospital on complaints of fever. The first PM revealed 39 injury marks on his palm and foot sole, however it did not attribute it as a reason for death. Patidar community organization joined by opposition Congress alleged that he died owing to police beating.

Gujarat government had ordered the police to lodge an FIR in this regard.
