BJP set to rule at least 47 municipalities, Congress 16

Gandhinagar: According to the State Election Commission, BJP has won 47 municipalities in 75-municipality elections, results of which are declared today.
Congress has won 16 municipalities, NCP 1, BSP 1, Independents 4, while 6 municipalities have hung body.
Out of total 2,060 seats that went for polling, BJP has won 1167 seats while Congress has won 630 seats followed by independents 202, NCP 28 and BSP 15.
Notification had been issued originally for 2,116 seats, of which 52 were won unopposed.
In 2013, out of same 74 municipalities, BJP had won 47 while 9 had been won by Congress, 6 by independents, 12 were hung. In Bhachau, counting had been stopped. When announced later, Congress was declared victorious in Bhachau, but soon BJP had managed to capture the body following rebellion in Congress.
In 2013, out of total 1905 seats, 1144 were captured by BJP while Congress had won 449 seats, independent 272, NCP 16, BSP 13, SP 2 and others 9.
Earlier the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) declared the list of municipality bodies it has captured in 75-municipality elections.
The municipalities that BJP has won include Valsad, Dharampur, Vijalpor, Bilimora, Surendranagar, Songadh, Karjan, Halol, Santrampur, Vidyanagar, Karamsad, Mahemdavad, Sanand, Bavla, Mansa, Idar, Prantij, Vijapur, Vadnagar, Kheralu, Harij, Chanasma, Rapar, Bhachau, Jamjodhpur, Kalavad, Dhrol, Dwarka, Bhanvad, Upleta, Jasdan, Jetpur, Halvad, Bantva, Kodinar, Chhaya, Kutiyana, Lathi, Jafrabad, Chalala, Shihor, Talaja, Gadhda, Thangadh.
State BJP chief Jitu Vaghani said, ‘Either BJP or independents have been victorious in the areas that had elected around 30 Congress MLAs.’
‘BJP had fielded its candidates on 1,979 of 2,116 eats of which 1,212 candidates are victorious which shows that more than 61% of BJP candidates have been victorious. In some municipalities, BJP has been elected to power for fourth or fifth term. BJP has also won by-poll of Rajkot Municipal Corporation’s ward number 4 seat which was earlier with Congress,’ Vaghani said.

‘BJP has won all 24 seats in Vidhanagar municipality which falls in State Congress president’s district. In many municipalities, Congress has not been able to win even a single seat. in Vadnagar municipality of Mahesana district, BJP has wown 27 of 18 seats. Congress has lost in area of leader of opposition and many other party leaders,’ he added.
‘People have elected more BJP candidates compared to previous election in 2013,’ Vaghani further said.
State Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki meanwhile said, Congress defeated BJP in Dhoraji, Bhayavadar, Salaya, Talod, Dhanera, Devgadh Baria, Jhalod, Radhanpur, Ode, Boriavi. In 2013, Congress had just 8 municipalities while today Congress has won 16 and with allies it has won 24 municipalities. In 2013, Congress had won 444 seats while in 2018 it has won 640 seats. Thus Congress has increased its seats by 44%. Once the figure of total votes is out, it will reveal how Congress has even added further votes compared to previous polls.’
It should be noted here that out of 75 municipalities, the results of 74 were declared today while in Jafrabad municipality, BJP had won all seats unopposed.
