Shops to be allowed to remain open round the clock: Gujarat cabinet approves amendments in Shops and Establishment Act
February 06, 2019
Gandhinagar: Gujarat government will move amendment in Shop and Establishment Act in upcoming assembly session. The State cabinet today approved the provisions to be amended through this bill, said Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel in his briefing today before media here.
He said introduction of proposed amendment bill is in tune with ease of doing business policy of central government.
There are 7 lakh small units registered under Shops and Establishment Act that provide employment to around 10 lakh people.
As per Shops and Establishment Act 1948, annual renewal was compulsory for shops. The amendment bill proposes only one-time permission and thus waives off annual renewal clause.
For businesses that have less than 10 employees, registration will not more be required as per proposed amendment bill. Business owner will just need to convey the starting date, type and location of his/her business through a letter.
Subject to some permissions, shop keepers will be allowed to keep open their shops round the clock as per another amendment in bill.
Overtime payment which is 1.5 fold at present is proposed to increase to 2 fold in amendment bill.
