Covaxin production in Gujarat proposed
May 16, 2021
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government, along with Hester Biosciences, an animal healthcare company and OmniBRx, a biotech company has approached the Government of India expressing interest in getting the technology from Bharat Biotech for making of vaccine against Covid19 to ramp up the manufacturing of Covaxin. If everything works, 20 million doses of Covaxin are estimated to be produced from Gujarat per month. “A triparty consortium has been formed with the Government of Gujarat as the lead partner, to explore the prospects of manufacturing the Covid vaccine through technology from Bharat Biotech,” Hester Biosciences CEO and MD Rajiv Gandhi said in a statement, as quoted by news agency PTI.
Bharat Biotech will transfer technology to these two companies and a state-run biotechnology research institute in Gandhinagar, an institute under the state’s department of science and technology. A statement released by the department of biotechnology (under the Union ministry of science & technology) on Saturday informed that “technology transfer agreements have been finalised with all manufacturers”.
