Old building of IIM Ahmedabad may not withstand the impact of natural calamity: IIT Roorkee team

Ahmedabad: In a meeting held on Sunday, discussions were held on the preservation and reconstruction of dorms and other buildings on the old IIM Ahmedabad campus, which was designed by American architect Louis Kahn. The meeting was called by Pankaj Patel, the chairman of the board of governors at IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and was attended by several alumni of institute and other stakeholders.

According to one alumnus present at the event, the IIM-A management has consistently emphasized the need to demolish the buildings as they are no longer sustainable. The report by the IIT Roorkee team provided perspective on this stance by highlighting that the buildings lack the necessary strength and could pose a danger to occupants. It was mentioned that in the event of a natural calamity such as an earthquake, the buildings might not withstand the impact.

While some alumni attempted to raise concerns about preserving the architectural legacy and exploring ways to conserve the structures, the majority expressed their support for the decision prioritizing safety and longevity. Although no official statement has been made by the institute in this regard. DeshGujarat
