Kejriwal moves to Supreme Court seeking stay on trial in GU defamation case

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has moved an application in the Supreme Court in an attempt to halt his ongoing trial for a criminal defamation case filed by Gujarat University. This move comes after his request for a stay was turned down by both a city sessions court and the Gujarat High Court earlier this month.

Kejriwal, in an application submitted to the city sessions court, stated that due to the denial of interim relief without an explanation, he has decided to challenge this decision at the highest court. The application also stated that Kejriwal approached the Supreme Court on August 18, with the appeal set to be heard on August 25.

On August 11, the Gujarat High Court declined to grant a temporary stay on the trial in the metropolitan court against Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh, a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The sessions court had also rejected their plea on August 5.

This case pertains to alleged derogatory and sarcastic remarks made by Kejriwal and Singh about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications.
