Funds Embezzlement Case: SC directs Teesta, Javed to cooperate with Guj Police

New Delhi: In connection with a case involving the alleged misappropriation of funds, the Supreme Court issued a directive on Wednesday to activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband, Javed Anand, instructing them to cooperate with the Gujarat Police. These directions were announced following a submission by Additional Solicitor General SV Raju that the two individuals were not being cooperative in the ongoing investigation.

A three-judge bench led by Justice SK Kaul, Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and PK Mishra, noted that a charge sheet had not yet been filed. They emphasized that the respondents should cooperate with the investigation when required, while disposing of a plea by the Gujarat government that challenged the grant of anticipatory bail to Teesta Setalvad.

Additionally, the Supreme Court resolved another plea by Setalvad, which sought the removal of remarks made by the Gujarat High Court in its February 8, 2019 judgment when granting her anticipatory bail. The bench stated that observations made at the bail stage would not significantly impact the trial of the case and made her anticipatory bail unconditional.

The case revolves around allegations of fraudulent acquisition of grants totaling Rs 1.4 crore from the central government between 2008 and 2013 through their NGO, Sabrang Trust, as accused by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch based on a complaint. DeshGujarat
