Australian who entered ground during world cup final sent on remand

Gandhinagar: A foreign national who was apprehended for trespassing onto the field during the ICC World Cup final match between India and Australia on Sunday, has been placed in one-day remand until 5 pm tomorrow, November 21, as per the court’s decision.

The accused was brought to the Gandhinagar sessions court today, where the police requested a 10-day remand, but the court has granted a one-day remand for now.

In a significant security breach at Narendra Modi Stadium, an Australian citizen named Ven Johnson rushed onto the field during the India-Australia final match of the Cricket World Cup 2023. He approached Virat Kohli, who was batting for India at the time, and touched him while carrying the Palestine flag. The individual wore a t-shirt with a pro-Palestine slogan, urging Israel to halt bombing.

As per a police complaint filed by Chandkheda Police, Ven Johnson attempted to jump the net around 3:30 pm. When staff intervened, he pushed them aside and successfully entered the ground. He reached the batting pitch, where he was apprehended and escorted outside the stadium. During questioning, he identified himself as Wen Johnson from Sydney, Australia, claiming to be a 24-year-old fan of Virat Kohli.
