Surat and Vadodara Airports to be privatized; All Airports in Gujarat report losses in 2022-23

New Delhi: Surat and Vadodara Airports will be among the 25 airports earmarked for leasing between 2022 and 2025, as per the National Monetisation Pipeline, stated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Presently, the Airports Authority of India operates 9 airports in Gujarat, and one airport in Ahmedabad is operated under the PPP model by the Adani Group. All of these airports reported losses for the financial year 2022-23. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad reported a loss of Rs. 408.51 crore in the financial year 2022-23. Vadodara Airport reported a loss amounting to Rs. 46.71 crore. Surat Airport saw a loss amounting to Rs. 31.99 crore. Rajkot Airport reported a Rs. 21.93 crore loss.

Bhavnagar Airport reported a loss of Rs. 10.11 crores. Bhuj Airport saw a loss of Rs. 5.73 crore. Jamnagar Airport reported a loss of Rs. 41 lakhs only. Kandla Airport saw the loss of Rs. 1.93 crore. Keshod airport reported a loss of Rs. 3.81 crore. Porbandar Airport reported a loss of Rs. 4.50 crore.

This data was provided by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation in Parliament. Here is the reply given in Rajya Sabha:

Presently, 14 airports in the country are operated under Public Private Partnership (PPP). A statement showing the details and  annual profit/loss of these airports for last 3 years (FY 2020-21 to FY 2022-23) is attached at Annexure-A.

A statement showing the annual profit/loss of 125 airports run by Airports Authority of India (AAI), for last 3 years (FY 2020-21 to FY 2022-23) is enclosed at Annexure-B.

As per National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP), 25 AAI airports namely, Bhubaneshwar, Varanasi, Amritsar, Trichy, Indore, Raipur, Calicut, Coimbatore, Nagpur, Patna, Madurai, Surat, Ranchi, Jodhpur, Chennai, Vijayawada, Vadodara, Bhopal, Tirupati, Hubli, Imphal, Agartala, Udaipur, Dehradun and Rajahmundry have been earmarked for leasing over the years 2022 to 2025.
