Surat: In a tragic incident, an elderly couple in the city committed suicide on Wednesday. The alleged reason for this step was that their son, who had settled in Canada, neglected them, failing to maintain contact for four years after his departure.
Chunibhai Gediya, 66, and his wife Mukta, 64, who used to live in Meera Avenue in the Sarthana area, left behind a suicide note expressing their feelings of abandonment by their son, Piyush. Despite depleting their resources to cover his business losses, Piyush did not respond to their calls or provide financial assistance.
The Sarthana police team reached the location and took the bodies of the deceased elderly couple to SMIMER Hospital for post-mortem. The police is taking legal action based on the suicide note recovered from the deceased.
According to the police, the couple had to borrow around Rs 40 lakh to cover their son Piyush’s business debts. Chunibhai had taken substantial loans from relatives in the hopes of securing a better future for Piyush in Canada. However, once abroad, Piyush ceased communication, neglecting even to inquire about his parents’ well-being. Chunibhai’s attempts to reach out via video calls remained unanswered, leaving the elderly couple feeling neglected and despondent.
The situation worsened when Piyush visited Surat from Canada and made no effort to meet his already ailing parents. Adding to the insult, Piyush’s wife, Payal, openly insulted the elderly couple. Feeling utterly abandoned, Chunibhai and Mukta decided to end their lives in a joint suicide. In their note, they stated that Piyush should not cremate their bodies. DeshGujarat
