SMC’s wastewater treatment plants generate Rs 557 crore since inception in 2014

Surat: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has generated ₹557 crore in revenue from wastewater treatment since 2014. SMC operates three tertiary treatment plants and supplies treated wastewater to industries. The revenue over ten years has surpassed the ₹379 crore expenditure for the project of wastewater treatment.

Each of the three tertiary treatment plants has a capacity of 115 minimal liquid discharge (MLD). These plants supply treated sewage water for industrial use. In 2014, these plants generated ₹36 crore in revenue, which increased to an income of ₹140 crore last year.

Plans are underway for a new 35 MLD treatment plant at the Bamroli Sewage Treatment Plant, costing ₹140 crore. Expected to be operational soon, it aims to generate an annual revenue of ₹42 crore by supplying treated wastewater to Pandesara industries. Future efforts target extending supply to industries in Palsana and Hajira.

From 2015 to 2018, the SMC earned Rs 17.16 crore, Rs 27.32 crore, Rs 30.90 crore, and Rs 33.20 crore, respectively. Subsequent annual incomes were Rs 17.64 crore in 2019, Rs 32.18 crore in 2020, Rs 49.90 crore in 2021, Rs 89.76 crore in 2022, and a record-breaking Rs 140 crore in 2023. In 2014, 749 MLD of water generated Rs 36 crore, increasing to 38,655 MLD in 2023, generating Rs 140 crore. This initiative by the SMC has received praise across the country. DeshGujarat
