July 10, 2024
Surat: Construction has started for a new concourse area above platform number 4 at Surat railway station. This concourse aims to connect all platforms through a new elevated area, located 9 meters above the existing railway tracks. The construction covers an estimated area of 10,900 square meters.
The concourse area, designed akin to a shopping mall, will feature food stalls and various shopping stores. Passengers will be permitted onto the platform only 20 minutes before train arrival, ensuring efficient movement and convenience. Additionally, the station will be equipped with 41 lifts and 70 escalators, ensuring full accessibility for disabled passengers.
Currently, platform number 4 of Surat railway station is closed for 90 days for demolition and pillar erection work as part of the Rs 1475 crore redevelopment plan. The first phase, costing Rs 980 crore, focuses on enhancing basic amenities. Future phases will involve a PPP model to further develop the station, beginning with platforms 2 and 3 after completion of platform 4’s concourse.
Moreover, an elevated road costing Rs 497 crore will also be constructed outside the station, spanning 5479 meters in length and 130 meters in width. It will facilitate smooth vehicular movement from Varachha to other destinations via the station. This road aims to streamline traffic flow and provide dedicated access to the station. DeshGujarat
