Gujarat govt reduces artificial insemination fee for cattle with sexed semen

Gandhinagar: In addition to making cattle rearers self-reliant in Gujarat, the Gujarat Government has announced that the current fee for artificial insemination of cattle with sexed semen at State Government Institutions, which is Rs. 300, has been reduced to Rs. 50.

Animal Husbandry Minister Raghavji Patel said, “Every new technology related to animal husbandry is quickly adopted in Gujarat, and the state government has always strived to make new technologies available to cattle rearers at minimal cost. Every cattle breeder aims for their cattle to give birth to female calves, which is made possible through the use of ‘sexed semen.'”

Under the “National Gokul Mission” implemented by the Central Government, the State Government has established a “Sexed Semen Laboratory” in Patan. The animal husbandry sector in the state is becoming more profitable, with more than 90% of calves born through the use of sexed semen produced in this lab being female.

Minister Patel further added that the actual cost of producing one sexed semen dose at the laboratory in Patan is approximately Rs. 710. However, the State Government initially made the semen doses available to cattle breeders at a reduced cost of Rs. 300. Now, the government has further reduced this fee to just Rs. 50. This decision is expected to increase productivity per animal in the long run.

Since sexed semen results in the birth of more female calves, the cost of raising male calves is reduced for breeders. Additionally, cattle rearers can focus their resources, such as fodder, on properly nurturing female animals, which increases milk production and boosts their income. Moreover, the birth of more female calves allows breeders to avoid purchasing new animals from outside, reducing the risk of diseases spread by imported livestock. DeshGujarat
