Surat: A Muslim youth was among five persons nabbed by police after an incident of stone pelting on Ganesh Utsav venue in Variyavi Lal Gate area of Surat.

A large number of Hindus gathered at Saiyedpura based Police chowki to protest the incident. According to locals, three Muslim youths arrived in an autorickshaw and pelted stones over Ganesh Utsav venue. The locals captured two of them and handed them over to police. Hindu youths also sat on the road and chanted ths slogans of Jay Shri Ram.

Several vehicles were damaged, and police used tear gas shells and lathicharge to control the mob.

Police Commissioner, city Mayor and local MLA reached the spot to cool down and sort out the situation. MLA Kanti Balar was addressing the Hindus to cool them down, while the Hindus were chanting ‘Yogi …. Yogi’.

The city police commissioner Anupamsinh Gehlot informed that stone were pelted on Ganesh Utsav venue after which police nabbed the accused including those minors. Combing operation was underway to nab more accused. Later stone pelting took place between groups of two communities. Actions will be taken against all who are involved and they are captured in CCTV footage at Command and Control Centre of police. They shall be identified and nabbed. DeshGujarat
