No more queues: Gujarat govt plans online learner’s licence test from home
May 13, 2025
Gandhinagar: If you want to get your learner’s driving licence, you will soon be able to do so from the comfort of your home. The Gujarat state transport department is planning to introduce the Home-Made Learning Licence (HMLL) system from next week, enabling applicants to take their driving theory test online from home.
As part of the project, applicants will be able to book an online test slot through the Sarathi portal and appear for the exam using a laptop or desktop. Upon passing, they will have 30 days to take the track test for a permanent licence.
Previously, online learning licence exams were restricted to designated ITI and polytechnic centres. Applicants had to complete the process online and then visit a centre for the test. With HMLL, the entire process—from uploading documents and paying the fee to taking the exam—will now be fully online.
RTO officials told the media that the test will consist of 15 multiple-choice questions, with a minimum of nine correct answers required to pass. The exam must be taken on a device with a functioning webcam, which will monitor for any suspicious behaviour and automatically disqualify violators. A mobile app to support the system is also under development.
This project was proposed last year to curb corruption at ITI centres and increase transparency, while also benefiting thousands of applicants across the state. DeshGujarat
