Rajkot: After a mass suicide attempt, nine members of a single family were shifted to the city civil hospital after consuming anthelmintic medicine today. It is reported that the family took this drastic step due to financial stress.
The family of Lalit Vallabhdas Odesara lives in Govindpura, Gundawadi, and runs a jewelry business in Soni Market. On Friday night, the entire family consumed anti-insect medication mixed with juice. However, they all regained consciousness by the evening and reached the hospital in time for treatment, where doctors reported that all family members are out of danger.
The trader explained that he was doing business with four traders from Mumbai, who initially made timely payments for the gold jewelry they purchased from him. However, after buying jewelry worth ₹2.75 crores, they failed to make further payments for a long time. The trader had also taken out a substantial bank loan, which he was unable to repay because the Mumbai traders did not pay him for the goods he sold. Their business has come to a standstill due to financial issues, and they have had to borrow money to manage their household, which contributed to their decision to attempt suicide.
The family members who consumed the medication include Lalit Vallabhdas Adesara (72), Meenaben Lalitbhai Adesara (64), Chetan Lalitbhai Adesara (45), Divyaben Chetanbhai Adesara (43), Jai Chetanbhai Adesara (21), Vishal Lalitbhai Adesara (43), Sangeeta Vishalbhai Adesara (41), and a minor (15). One member was reported to be less affected by the poison.
The names of the Mumbai businessmen involved, who owe ₹3 crores, are Vijay Kailasji, Prashantbhai, Nirmalbhai, and Mahendrabhai. The family had previously filed a complaint regarding this matter. The police are making efforts to record statements from everyone involved, as this incident has created a stir throughout the city and in Soni Market.
