Dispute involving Surat’s well-known Lalbhai Contractor family reaches police

Surat: A family dispute involving the Lalbhai Ramjibhai Contractor family has reached the Surat police with a complaint against Kanaiyalal Lalbhai Contractor, accusing him of securing a loan with a fake Power of Attorney in the name of other family members.

The wife and daughters of the late Hemant Contractor (younger son of Lalbhai) have approached the police, alleging that Kanaiyalal created a bogus Power of Attorney of Hemant, Nayanaben, and Dahiben, using forged photos and signatures to secure a loan of ₹2.92 crore. The matter came to light when installments totaling ₹67 lakh remained unpaid, prompting the finance company to seize property valued at ₹3 crore, belonging to Hemant, to recover the pending amount.

G.A. Sarvaiya, SP of the Eco Cell, Surat Police, stated, “Nayana Hemant Contractor has filed a complaint against her brother-in-law Kanaiyalal, accusing him of forging the Power of Attorney and securing a loan of ₹2.92 crore on their jointly owned property. We have registered a case and are conducting further investigation.”

Hemant Contractor’s daughter told the media, “This matter dates back to 2009. The property is jointly owned by my uncle, my father, my mother, and my grandmother. My uncle used fake signatures of my father, mother, and grandfather to create a Power of Attorney and took a loan of ₹2.92 crore, which remains unpaid. Now, the recovery agency has obtained a court order to seize the property. We filed this complaint because our uncle committed forgery. We three women are left to protect my father’s property and seek justice for him.” DeshGujarat
