AMC likely to mandate RFID microchips for pet dogs, tags for strays
October 26, 2024
Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to introduce mandatory Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) microchips for pet dogs and RFID ear tags for stray dogs in the city.
According to the civic body, there are around 50,000 pet dogs in the city. Pet dog registration will become compulsory, requiring an RFID microchip that includes details such as vaccination status and the owner’s name. The Cattle Nuisance Control (CNC) Department will enforce the mandatory registration and vaccination for pets through a new policy in the next three months, with a registration fee of Rs 500 per dog. As part of this initiative, a proposal to procure these chips and tags, estimated to cost Rs 1.80 crore annually, was presented at AMC’s standing committee meeting on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in an effort to eliminate rabies, AMC aims to vaccinate and sterilize all stray dogs, equipping them with RFID tags containing vaccination and sterilization details. AMC has selected an agency called BizOrbit Technologies to supply the necessary chips, tags, and equipment, and the proposal has been submitted for approval.
In another development, the civic body is also considering restricting pet dogs from public spaces like parks and establishing shelters for aggressive pets in residential areas. DeshGujarat
