Gujarat Vidyapith campus likely to become vehicle-restricted zone
November 12, 2024
Ahmedabad: In an effort to promote public transport and vehicle-sharing, Gujarat Vidyapith is set to implement a vehicle-restricted zone on its campus.
Following an internal survey among faculty, staff, and students regarding the use of private and public vehicles, the university has decided to create two separate parking lots for cars and two-wheelers near the back entrance. These new parking areas will replace the current designated and non-designated spaces used by staff and visitors across the campus.
Additionally, the university plans to open the gates near the metro station to encourage the use of public transport. “To manage vehicles on the campus, designated parking lots will be established. Electric golf carts will be provided for internal transport. These measures aim to regulate campus traffic and enhance cleanliness,” said Gujarat Vidyapith Vice-Chancellor Harshad Patel.
Currently, the university has one electric golf cart, built by its students, and is in the process of acquiring another similar vehicle.
The survey, conducted among nearly 200 staff members, revealed that about 75% of them use private vehicles for commuting, while only 11.5% rely on public transport such as buses or the metro. The survey also showed that 80% of staff members park their vehicles for more than an hour. Among the nearly 360 students residing on campus, only 15 own two-wheelers. DeshGujarat
