Why BJP couldn’t achieve half mark in Chhota Udepur municipal polls? Answer lies in demography

Chhota Udepur: Chhota Udepur Municipal polls showed fragmented result today with winning candidated divided in various parties like BJP, Congress, BSP, SP, Sarva Samaj Party, Navin Bharat Nirman Manch and independents. Demography of voters (significant numbers of Muslims) played a major role in BJP not getting half mark of 14 seats here. However Muslim voters choose various non-BJP parties and independents, resulting into fragmented result.

While BJP won seats in Hindu majority wards number 02, 04, and 07, the other parties won in Muslims majority wards number 01, 03, 05, 06. In Muslim majority votes, reserved seats of SC, ST where Muslim candidates would not be possible, the Muslim voters voted for non-BJP SC, ST candidates.

While Samajwadi Party won 6 seat and same number of seats were won by inedependents, BSP won 04 seats, newly formed Sarv Samaj Party also 04 seats, Navin Bharat Nirman Manch won 1 and Congress also won 1 seat. BJP won 8 seats and emerged as the single largest party.

It’s worth noting that Muslim voters who occupy significant portion of voters in Chhota Udepur municipality area voted for the main opposition Congress on just one seat. They otherwise relied on other parties and independents.

Looking at the Muslim candidates who won – Congress’s only winning candidate Nasimbanu Dal won in ward number 01. Zakir Andhi, Nazmabibi, Namza Mala won as independents. Muslim candidates Taslimakhan Pathan and Zakirhussain Dadi won as Gujarat Sarva Samaj Party(GSSP) candidate. Parvez Makrani, Mujib Sheikh, Rashidabibi won as Samajwadi Party(SP) candidates. Faruk Foda won as newly formed Navin Bharatiya Nirman Manch (NBMM) candidate.
