Rajkot: In a proactive move to ensure uninterrupted water supply during the upcoming summer months, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has initiated the refilling of the Aji-1 dam with Narmada waters. This decision comes in anticipation of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam’s planned closure of the Narmada canal for repairs during April and May, a period of peak water demand.

Recognizing the potential for water scarcity during the canal shutdown, the RMC had previously written to the irrigation department requesting the refilling of the city’s lifeline dams, Aji-1 and Nyari-1, through the SAUNI Yojana (Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation Yojana) before March.

Responding to this request, the irrigation department has commenced pumping Narmada water into the significantly depleted Aji-1 dam. Sources indicate that approximately 12 to 15 million cubic feet (MCFT) of water are being pumped daily into the dam using two pumps. Currently, the Aji-1 dam holds 864 MCFT of water, with a target capacity of 1800 MCFT.

Meanwhile, the Nyari-1 dam is reported to be 90% full, holding 1154 MCFT of water. The irrigation department plans to begin refilling Nyari-1 with Narmada water once the Aji-1 dam reaches its desired level.

This strategic move aims to prevent water shortages in Rajkot during the peak summer months when the Narmada canal will be closed for maintenance. By proactively replenishing the dams, the RMC and the irrigation department are working to ensure a consistent and reliable water supply for the city’s residents.
