Ahmedabad: A city sessions court has convicted Ashok Patel, a cosmetics dealer, for selling misbranded products. As punishment, the court ordered him to remain in the courtroom for a day and imposed a fine of ₹25,000.
The case dates back to January 30, 2013, when a government food inspector raided Patel’s firm, Maruti Corporation, in Odhav and found cosmetics such as hair oil, shampoo, handwash, talcum powder, and soap bars without mandatory labeling. Though Patel denied the charges, the court held him guilty under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. While lab tests from Vadodara’s Food & Drug Laboratory confirmed the products were of standard quality and not drugs, the court deemed the misbranding offence valid. It stated that a sentence until the rising of the court and a monetary fine was appropriate. DeshGujarat
