Surat court issues notice to Anurag Kashyap over ‘Brahmin pe mootoonga’ remarks

Surat: A local court in Surat has issued a notice to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the Brahmin community in a social media post. The Surat Judicial Magistrate First Class Court, under Judge A.L. Trivedi, has directed Kashyap to appear before the court on May 7 with legal counsel.

Kashyap’s controversial post, shared on April 16, 2025, sparked outrage across the country, particularly among the Brahmin community. In response to the backlash, Kashyap deleted the post from his account the following day and issued apology videos on April 17 and 19.

In the original post, Kashyap, responding to a social media user, wrote: “Brahmin pe main mootoonga… koi problem? (I will urinate on Brahmins… any problem?) (sic)”

Surat-based lawyer Kamlesh Rawal filed the complaint against Anurag Kashyap on April 22. Speaking to the media, Rawal said, “On April 16, Kashyap made a derogatory remark about the Brahmin community. When one Aditya Dutta urged him to avoid such comments, Kashyap responded by asking, ‘What have you Brahmins accomplished?’ I have now filed a complaint in the Surat court under BNS sections 196, 197, 351, 352, 353, and 356. After verifying and reviewing all the submitted documents, the court has issued a notice summoning Kashyap to appear on May 7.”

The Surat district court in its notice said, “You (Anurag Kashyap) are hereby instructed to appear before the court on May 7, 2025, at 10:45 AM, or through an authorized representative. Failure to do so will result in ex-parte actions.” DeshGujarat
