July 08, 2025
Gandhinagar: July 1st this year marked eight years since the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which removed multiple types of taxes like VAT, CST, Octroi, Entry Tax, Service Tax, and Central Excise Duty, and made the process of calculating and paying taxes easier for traders and consumers. Due to this tax reform, Gujarat’s contribution to the Indian economy has increased significantly over the last eight years, an official note states.
As per an official release, the number of new taxpayers in Gujarat has been increasing continuously every year since the implementation of GST. When GST was implemented eight years ago, there were more than 5.15 lakh taxpayers in the state. Today, with an increase of 145 percent in the year 2024–25, the number of taxpayers in the state has crossed 12.46 lakh, which is more than double. Gujarat is now third in the country in terms of the number of registered taxpayers, which is a prime example of its growing economic activity and tax discipline.
