Vadodara: More than 100 female students from Maharaja Sayajirao University’s girls’ hostels were rushed to the government-run SSG Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday after several began experiencing symptoms of food poisoning, primarily vomiting.
Officials from both MSU and SSG Hospital confirmed that the students are in stable condition. Many have already been discharged after receiving primary treatment. Professor Dhanesh Patel, the acting vice-chancellor of MSU, stated that about 350 students had eaten dinner at the university’s SD Hall on Tuesday night. “Around 1:30 am, nearly 100 students reported health issues after dinner. All are currently stable,” he said.
The dinner reportedly included paneer sabzi and kheer. Patel added that there may also have been an issue with the drinking water served. “We are investigating the food and water sources thoroughly. Appropriate action will be taken against those responsible, but our main focus right now is the well-being of our students,” he assured.
Food Safety Officer V.H. Nisarkata stated that health department teams had reached the mess and observed a lack of hygiene. A notice will be issued accordingly. Currently, three food inspectors are on duty, collecting various food samples. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team is also working on-site.
RMO of Sayaji Hospital, Dr. Hitendra Chauhan, confirmed that 89 girl students were brought in with complaints of vomiting after having dinner at the MS University girls’ hostel. All have been admitted and are under treatment. He said their condition is stable. “They mentioned eating kheer and paneer sabzi. All have been admitted across five different wards of the hospital,” he added. DeshGujarat
