Police drive against Helmet rule violation in Rajkot city from today

Rajkot: Wearing helmets has been made mandatory for two-wheeler riders in Rajkot following a Supreme Court directive and subsequent rules under the Motor Vehicles Act. While the rule has been in force for some time, enforcement had remained lax as police focused on more serious traffic violations.

Beginning today, Rajkot Police have launched a strict drive to enforce helmet compliance at 44 designated traffic points across the city. Riders found without helmets will face a fine of ₹500. To mark the start of the campaign, the police organized a rally on Sunday evening to raise public awareness about road safety.

However, the decision has sparked opposition. Several local groups and the Congress party staged a dharna under the banner of the Satyagrah Samiti at Trikon Baug. Protesters argued that helmets obstruct vision and make riding difficult, particularly for women. They also contended that since vehicle speeds within the city are relatively low due to congestion and frequent obstructions, mandatory helmets are unnecessary.

Despite the resistance, the police have clarified that the rule will be strictly implemented, and citizens are urged to prioritize safety by wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers. DeshGujarat
