Gandhinagar: Resentment has erupted among teachers after arrest warrants were reportedly issued against some teachers who failed to attend duties under the Special Electoral Roll Reform Campaign (SIR). On Saturday, teachers and educational unions in Rajkot submitted a representation to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel through the District Collector, demanding an immediate end to the practice.

The federation has called for the “complete abolition” of issuing arrest warrants against teachers assigned to Booth Level Officer (BLO) and assistant BLO duties. They argued that such orders not only undermine teachers’ dignity but also significantly disrupt academic activities at the school level, ultimately affecting children’s education.

The federation pointed out that teachers, despite their sincere participation in national duties, may be unable to attend BLO work due to personal, social or unforeseen reasons. Issuing arrest warrants in such circumstances, they said, is highly unfortunate and oppressive.

In their memorandum, the primary teachers’ federation noted that under the special intensive campaign for electoral roll revision announced by the Election Commission, BLOs have been tasked with door-to-door verification from November 4 to December 4. Teachers were initially instructed to carry out this duty after school hours, which they described as difficult, time-consuming and mentally exhausting.

Teachers argued that the recurring assignment of electoral-related responsibilities burdens the education system and diverts them from their core academic role.
Teacher unions said that while they remain committed to national duties, punitive measures such as arrest warrants damage morale and violate professional respect. They urged the state government and administration to review current practices and ensure more humane and practical arrangements for election-related work.
