Sabarmati Loco Shed introduces indigenous vacuum device for railway track cleaning

Sabarmati: Indian Railways has introduced a new eco-friendly and technologically advanced system to remove waste from railway tracks. Under the Make in India initiative, the Sabarmati Loco Shed of Western Railway has developed an indigenous Vacuum Assisted Track (VAT) Cleaning Device, offering a cost-effective solution for cleaner and safer tracks.

This eco-friendly device is an in-house innovation that utilizes the radiator fan of an HHP locomotive. It is mounted vertically on a Diesel Working Trolley (DWT) and draws power directly from the locomotive. The radiator fan chamber is connected to a specially designed waste collection chamber, enabling efficient removal of debris from railway tracks and surrounding areas.

Operating at a high speed of 1,000 to 1,800 RPM, the device generates powerful suction. An ON/OFF switch and variable speed control are provided on the driver’s desk, allowing the driver to regulate suction power from the cabin. The large waste collection chamber, measuring 120 × 55 × 65 inches, along with a heavy-duty net bag installed inside, simplifies waste collection and disposal.

A 200 mm diameter suction hose and a mechanical movement system enable a single operator to clean both the track and trackside areas. The device functions completely independently of the locomotive’s control system, ensuring safe operation, and cleaning can also be carried out while the locomotive is in motion.

Western Railway stated that this indigenous innovation reflects its commitment to sustainability, technological advancement, and improved track hygiene. The machine has recently been put into operation and will be gradually deployed at more locations. DeshGujarat
