Machhunagar bridge on Kharicut canal to shut for six months; traffic diversions announced

Ahmedabad: Traffic movement on the Machhunagar bridge over the Kharicut canal in the Vatva GIDC area will remain completely closed for six months, from January 1 to June 30, 2026, following orders issued by G. S. Malik, Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad.

The decision has been taken as the existing bridge over the canal near Machhunagar has been declared structurally unsafe and will be demolished to facilitate the construction of a new bridge by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).

According to the official order, the approximately 23-metre-long bridge will be dismantled, and in the interest of public safety and smooth execution of the work, vehicular movement on a 200-metre stretch between Ramol crossroads and Trikampura Patiya will be completely prohibited for all types of vehicles during the construction period.

Traffic Restrictions and Diversions

The road stretch from Ramol crossroads to Ambika three roads (Machhunagar bridge area) will remain closed to all vehicles.

Traffic coming from inside the Vatva GIDC area will be diverted via Ramol Police Chowky, Hathijan Lalgebi Circle, and further towards Trikampura through alternative main roads.

Vehicles entering Vatva GIDC from outside will be diverted from Trikampura crossroads by turning left towards GIDC using alternate internal routes.

Legal Provisions and Enforcement

The restrictions have been imposed under Section 33 of the Gujarat Police Act, 1951, and Rule 207 of the Gujarat Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Violators of the order will be liable for action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 131 of the Gujarat Police Act.

All police officers and personnel, from police constables to Special, Joint, and Additional Commissioners of Police in the Ahmedabad Commissionerate, have been authorised to take legal action against violators. DeshGujarat
