‘This is loot’: Late-night Uber cab surge pricing at Ahmedabad airport sparks Twitter reactions

Ahmedabad: A late-night arrival at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport turned into a point of public frustration after one Manoj Nair shared his experience on X, sparking a heated thread with dozens of replies accusing ride-hailing services and airport operations of exploitative pricing.
In his original post tagging Uber and the Ahmedabad civic body, Nair wrote, “Landed in Ahd yesterday at 12 am. I could see around 200 ppl waiting for cabs. Then the shocker from @UberIndia. This is loot – Rs 60 per km? @AmdavadAMC should keep the BRTS services at airport on until 2 AM with a 30 min frequency if not 10 mins. We shld watch urban mobility!”
He attached a screenshot from the Uber app showing surge-priced fares, including options like “Go Non AC” at Rs 1,161.81, “Uber Go” at Rs 1,179.85, and “UberXL” at Rs 1,819.20.
The thread quickly gained traction, amassing over 34,000 views, 344 likes, and 39 replies within hours. Respondents echoed Nair’s sentiments, with some blaming airport operator Adani for high pickup fees passed on to passengers.
Please don’t take flights to Ahmedabad during 11pm-7am is what I learnt from my travel history.
Arrive at airport in other times and take the BRTS bus and get the f*** out of that chomtiya airport

One user, TheMulyaMen, noted that “120 rupees or so from this is paid to the Adani airport.” Nair replied that Rapido pays Rs 150 per ride, while Uber and Ola have partnerships, adding, “daily 1000 rides with 150 for the parking… No wonder facilities are definitely good and required.”
Another one said, “Please don’t take flights to Ahmedabad during 11pm-7am is what I learnt from my travel history. Arrive at airport in other times and take the BRTS bus and get the f*** out of that chomtiya airport Sabke milke passenger ka kaatne k liye he”
Another user sarcastically commented, “If they keep BRTS running then how will Adani make money?” — earning a clapping emoji acknowledgment from Nair.
Meanwhile, a user by the ID ManuWriter argued the issue goes beyond Uber or BRTS, saying, “This is not just a problem of BRTS or Uber but somewhere i believe @AdaniOnline has been charging too much fees from cabs only for picking up passengers. Its one thing about having ‘parking charges’ from cabs but this arrival pickup is unjust…”
Amid the backlash, one user shared a practical workaround. Dileep Tanna suggested, “There is a hack if you wanna try !! Go to sardarnagar Circle then book a cab and you will get less fare compared to the airport price.. Only 1km of walk could save hundreds of your pockets..”
Nair agreed but pointed out the impracticality for families, elderly passengers, or those with luggage, stressing that only “Public transport can break this nexus,” especially in the context of future events like the Commonwealth Games.
Other users shared personal experiences, with one passenger noting she paid only Rs 250 for 6 km on Rapido recently, calling the displayed high fares possibly an outlier. Some suggested choosing cheaper auto options or avoiding midnight arrivals altogether.
The discussion also touched on the lack of metro connectivity. “I am surprised why they don’t have direct metro line for Airport??” one user asked, while noting that the metro route extension to the airport is under consideration by the government.
A few defended the pricing as market dynamics, with one calling it “free market at play. Demand Vs Supply,” while still agreeing on the need for extended BRTS services.
Just last week, another user had highlighted similar concerns, writing, “I urge everyone who is using uber, ola, rapido from Adani Ahmedabad airport, to be vigilant, these cab aggregators are putting extra charges after the trip started…”
The conversation has once again highlighted passenger frustration with late-night transport options at the state’s biggest airport, where high demand, surge pricing, and alleged access fees combine to create steep travel costs. DeshGujarat
