NHAI debunks fake news on FASTag annual pass restrictions for 7-seater cars
January 27, 2026
New Delhi: In a bid to curb the spread of misinformation, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued an official clarification regarding the eligibility criteria for its FASTag annual pass programme.
The authority emphasized that all non-commercial cars, jeeps, and vans equipped with active FASTags remain eligible, dismissing rumours of restrictions based on vehicle seating capacity. The clarification was shared through a post on X from NHAI’s official account, along with a graphic warning against “fake news.” The image highlighted a misleading claim suggesting that from January 1, 2026, the annual pass would not be valid for private 7-seater vehicles while remaining applicable to 5-seater models. NHAI stamped the notice as “Fake News” and reiterated that the pass continues to work for all qualifying vehicles.
“NHAI would like to clarify that all non-commercial Car/Jeep/Van with active FASTag are eligible for the Annual Pass. Kindly refrain from spreading fake news,” the post read. DeshGujarat
