SMC Dy Commissioner Swati Desai Reconsiders, Withdraws Resignation
February 24, 2026
Surat: Weeks after stepping down from her post, citing a lack of time for her children, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) Deputy Commissioner Swati Desai has opted to retract her resignation.
Desai, 43, had resigned earlier this month, stating that her demanding schedule left her little time for her 11-year-old twin sons. The resignation was under process and required clearance within a month. On February 21, she submitted a fresh letter to Municipal Commissioner M. Nagarajan seeking to revoke it.
A first woman to hold the post and currently in charge of the Udhna zone, Desai has over 20 years of service and 15 years remaining. She had earlier said she wanted to focus on her children’s upbringing and academics. After discussions with family members, she reconsidered her decision.
Commissioner Nagarajan confirmed receiving both letters and said a decision would be taken as per procedure. He described Desai as a sincere and hardworking officer with a clean record.
Desai joined the SMC as a clerk in 2007, became Municipal Secretary in 2017, the first and youngest woman to hold the post and was promoted to Deputy Municipal Commissioner in 2021. She completed her MBA, M.Com, and Company Secretary qualifications during her service. DeshGujarat
