Twitter Spat Ignites Debate on Ahmedabad’s Sporting Legacy Amid India’s T20 World Cup Triumph
March 09, 2026
Ahmedabad: As India celebrated a resounding victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, clinching the title with a 96-run win over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium, a heated online debate erupted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) questioning the city’s sporting culture. The match, held on March 8, saw India post an imposing 255/5 in 20 overs before bowling out New Zealand for 159 in 19 overs, marking their third T20 World Cup title. Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Match for his stellar performance. The controversy began with a post from user Krishna Anand (@KrishnaAnand_), who criticized Ahmedabad’s role in hosting major finals. “Ahmedabad is not a sporting city, it never has been,”
Anand wrote. “That’s why every time there’s a final played there, more than 50% crowd is from outside the city. There’s no sporting culture, vibe. Just making the largest stadium might bring you gate revenues but it doesn’t bring you support or success for India.” The post, shared early on match day, quickly went viral, garnering over 6,310 likes and sparking hundreds of replies and quotes.
One particularly sharp response came from Prachetas Bhimajiyani (@Prachetas_B), a Chartered Accountant and avid reader, who quoted Anand’s post and fired back: “Look at this bald moron. Have you heard about Duleep Trophy? Ranjee Trophy? Do you know Bumrah, Pujara? Hardik Pandya, Ajay Jadeja, Ravindra Jadeja, Parthiv Patel, Pathan brothers, Akshar Patel? Are you retarded by birth or did a special course?” Bhimajiyani’s retort highlighted Gujarat’s rich cricketing history, referencing domestic tournaments like the Duleep and Ranji Trophies (noting the apparent typo in “Ranjee”) and a roster of prominent players hailing from the state.
Adding fuel to the defense, user AMIT GADHAVI (@amit_gadhavi) chimed in with a pointed reply emphasizing historical and contemporary contributions: “1. Papa Ko Puchho Ke Ranji Trophy Ka Naamkaran Kaise Hua. 2. Vijay Hazare Trophy – Vijay Hazare Kaun Si Team Se Khelte The? 3. Out of 11 – Jaspreet Boomra, Hardik Pandya, Akshar Patel Kanha Se Belong Karte Hain 4. Commentary Irfan and Parthiv Patel belongs to?JaySha icc chairman.” The post underscored the Ranji Trophy’s naming after Ranjitsinhji from Gujarat’s Nawanagar, Vijay Hazare’s association with Baroda, key players like Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel from the region, commentators Irfan Pathan and Parthiv Patel, and Jay Shah as ICC chairman.
Further bolstering the argument for Gujarat’s deep cricketing roots, defenders noted that the Duleep Trophy is named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji (also known as Duleepsinhji), a legendary batsman who was born in Nawanagar (present-day Jamnagar, Gujarat) and was the nephew of Ranjitsinhji, after whom the Ranji Trophy is named. Duleepsinhji, a stylish player who represented England in Tests, hailed from the Kathiawar peninsula in what is now Gujarat, reinforcing the state’s longstanding connection to the sport’s heritage in India.
The exchange fueled a broader discussion on X, with users divided over the crowd’s energy during the game. Ritesh Banglani (@banglani) observed, “The ahemdabad crowd goes quiet the moment things go even a little south for India. This is so different from Mumbai and Bangalore, where the crowd stays behind the team no matter what. IMO it’s the difference between loving a team and only loving winning.” Vivek Raju (@vivekraju93) attributed this to a higher “posers-to-fans ratio” in finals, particularly in cities with less entrenched sporting traditions.
Defenders of Ahmedabad pointed to the city’s contributions to Indian cricket. Nilesh Shah (@NileshShah68), a market enthusiast, countered Anand’s claims by noting that key players like Bumrah (born in Ahmedabad), Hardik Pandya (from nearby Baroda), and Axar Patel (from Nadiad) represent about 27% of the Indian team despite Gujarat comprising fewer ratio of India’s total population. “Can this happen without a sporting culture?” Shah asked, adding historical context: “The first time cricket in the subcontinent was played in Khambhat… few centuries ago.”
Other users echoed similar sentiments. Shehroz Saleem (@ShehrozSaleem) argued that producing great players doesn’t equate to a city’s sporting vibe, comparing it to Silicon Valley’s startup ecosystem not making every neighborhood a hub. Meanwhile, Manthan Shah (@ManthanShah155) expressed optimism: “I can only laugh and enjoy while people like you ensure we make Ahmedabad the best sporting venue in india.”
The debate also touched on crowd behavior during the final. Rishabh (@jokebazz) described the stadium as “stun silent” early on, likening it to a “Shamshan” (crematorium) and contrasting it with Mumbai’s Wankhede. Karan Kumar (@karankomaar) questioned the inconsistency in criticisms: “I keep hearing two criticism – Ahmedabad isn’t a sporting city so more than half the audience is not from Ahmedabad. And that the audience is so Ahmedabad that the stadium is eerily quiet. How are both true?”
Despite the online friction, India’s dominant performance silenced doubters on the field. Celebrations erupted across the nation, with the team lifting the trophy amid golden confetti at the Narendra Modi Stadium – the world’s largest cricket venue with a capacity of over 132,000. Varun Chauhan (@varun_thecv) noted how the win “killed the narrative” around negative trends like the stadium being “Panauti” (jinxed) or lacking crowd support. As the dust settles, the discourse underscores the passionate divide among cricket fans, blending regional pride, historical facts, and match-day observations. With Ahmedabad hosting the final successfully, questions about its sporting ethos may persist, but India’s victory ensures the city’s place in cricketing lore remains undisputed.
