Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has decided to continue irrigation water supply through canals till April 30, 2026, in the interest of farmers and to support the delayed Rabi season, Water Resources Minister Ishwar Singh Patel said on Friday. The decision was taken following directions from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel after reviewing the current agricultural situation in the state.

The minister said the last monsoon started earlier than usual and withdrew late, while unseasonal rains caused significant damage to Kharif crops in several parts of the state. Due to the extended monsoon, the sowing of Rabi crops was delayed, which may also lead to late harvesting this year. Normally, canal water for irrigation is supplied only till the end of February.

Farmer leaders had demanded that the water supply be continued during March and April to prevent losses to standing Rabi crops. The issue was discussed in a high-level meeting held on March 11, 2026, after which the state government decided to extend the irrigation supply.

The minister said water will be released from canals under the Water Resources Department till April 30, while ensuring that drinking water needs and other reserved requirements are not affected. DeshGujarat
