Over 66 hospitalised for food poisoning after eating mutton, fish at wedding in Ahmedabad
April 01, 2026
Ahmedabad: A celebratory wedding dinner turned into a medical emergency in the city early Wednesday morning after around 70 guests were rushed to hospitals with symptoms of severe food poisoning.
Starting at approximately 2:30 am on April 1, 2026, a large number of people began arriving at the Infectious Disease Hospital, complaining of diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. According to a press note issued by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Health Department, an investigation revealed that all affected individuals had attended a wedding function the previous night, March 31, at Kankaria Picnic House.
The victims reported consuming dinner around 10:00 pm. Food items served at the event included mutton biryani, halwa, fish, dahi vada, buttermilk, and mocktails. Within three to four hours of consuming the food, several attendees began experiencing symptoms and sought medical treatment.
As per the latest update, 66 patients are undergoing treatment at the Infectious Disease Hospital. Several others have been admitted to different healthcare facilities, including Kutch Panjrapol Hospital, Shifa Hospital, and L.G. Hospital.
The AMC Food Department has initiated an investigation and collected samples of mutton biryani, dry fruit halwa, and fish for laboratory testing. Additionally, samples of “molo mavo” (unsweetened milk solids) have been seized from the supplier. To rule out water contamination, authorities have also collected water samples from both the supplier and the host’s residence.
The Health Department confirmed that a police complaint has been filed against the catering service responsible for the event.
In response to the outbreak, the AMC Health Department’s Epidemic Branch has initiated several preventive measures in the affected areas, including active case surveillance, distribution of chlorine tablets and ORS packets, and dissemination of health awareness materials to prevent further spread of illness.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as laboratory reports of the collected samples are awaited. DeshGujarat
